On December 28, 2010, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping held consultation with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin in Moscow. The two sides discussed issues including the high-level bilateral exchanges next year, the current situation on the Korean Peninsula and the comprehensive development of China-Russia strategic partnership of cooperation.
Talking about the current situation on the Korean Peninsula, they pointed out that the frequent occurrence of incidents and continuous escalation of situation there are against the interest of all parties including China, Russia, the US and Japan while North and South Korea stand in the breach. China and Russia firmly believe what is needed there is the easing of situation, not tension; dialogue, not confrontation; peace, not war. They will in no way allow the resumption of hostilities on the Peninsula nor want to see the situation there remains tense. China and Russia will continue to strengthen coordination and collaboration on the Peninsula issue, push for direct dialogue between North Korea and South Korea and urge parties concerned to do more things conducive to peace and stability rather than undermining the Peninsula's peace, security and stability.
They stressed that practices show the six-party talks is the most realistic and effective channel to solve the Peninsula issue. The priority at present is to hold the emergency consultations among the chief negotiators of the six parties as soon as possible so that the Peninsula will move from confrontation to dialogue until lasting peace and stability are realized.
