On February 10 and 11, 2006, Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo held the 4th Strategic Dialogue with Japanese Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Shotaro YACHI in Japan. The two sides exchanged views in a candid manner mainly on how to solve the major problems affecting the development of bilateral relations.

The dialogue also involved in a wide range of other issues of common concern. Chinese Ambassador to Japan Wang Yi and Director General of the Department of Asian Affairs of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China Hu Zhengyue as well as Director General of the Bureau of Asian and Oceanian Affairs of Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Japan Kenichiro SASAE also attended the dialogue.
