2005-01-23 00:00

On January 21, 2005, Premier Wen Jiabao met with British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Jack Straw in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai.

Wen made positive comments on the sound development momentum of China-UK relations and expressed admiration on the UK government's adherence to the one-China policy. China-UK relations have entered into the mature stage. The leaders of both countries look at bilateral ties from a long-term and strategic perspective, making it possible that bilateral relations maintain stable development and get increasingly enriched. Both China and UK are the permanent members of the UN Security Council and shoulder the same tasks of maintaining world peace and development. China is willing to keep high-level exchanges with UK, strengthen bilateral cooperation in all fields and constantly push forward the all-round strategic partnership between the two countries, said Wen.

Straw said that since his last visit to China two and half years ago, both China and China-UK relations have made remarkable development. During the visit of Premier Wen last May, both countries established the all-round strategic partnership and the regular meeting mechanism. At present, the two countries maintain close contacts on many international and regional issues. UK is willing to further develop the comprehensive cooperative relations with China in all fields including politics and economy.
